wbc bans arreola for swearing during merchant's interview

this is a c\p by
By Eric Thomas: According to the latest news in the boxing world, heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (27-1, 24 KO’s) has been banned six months from boxing by the WBC because of the swearing that the 28-year-old Arreola did after his 10th round stoppage loss to World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on September 26th at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. Arreola, visibly upset and crying after his fight was stopped against Klitschko said the following words when being interviewed by HBO announcer Larry Merchant after the fight:

“I worked my xxx off. xxxx Vitali is a strong motherxxxxxx I wanted to go the full 12. I knew it was xxxxxxx me up. I couldn’t get to him, Man. xxxx This aint the last you’ll see of me. xxxx that. I’m coming back.”

You can’t blame Arreola for swearing because he was clearly upset and wound up from the loss. It’s only natural that a blue collar fighter like Arreola would let out a few obscenities after being beaten so badly by Klitschko. A lot of fighters in the same situation would probably do the same.
The ban is reportedly backdated from the September fight, meaning that Arreola wouldn’t be able to fight against until March 2010. That’s bad news for Arreola, though, because he had plans on fighting again in December against a still to be determined opponent. What’s unclear is whether Arreola will honor the ban. Arreola is ranked highly by the other boxing organizations and in theory wouldn’t necessarily need to follow a ban by the WBC if he didn’t want to.
Of course, they might drop Arreola from the rankings if he does decide to fight, but it still might not matter all that much to Arreola because he probably is better off staying clear of WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in the near future. Arreola was badly over-matched by the 38-year-old Klitschko and was never able to land with any real consistency in the fight.
A rematch would be pointless for Arreola and he’ll likely not get another shot at Klitschko for another year or possibly two even under the best of circumstances. Arreola might be better off staying busy, ignoring the WBC ban and seeking out IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, the younger brother of Vitali, or the winner of the November 7th bout between World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev and challenger David Haye. Arreola would have a much better chance of beating Wladimir Klitschko, Haye or Valuev then he would in beating Vitali in a rematch.

I not only agree on the ban, I think it should have been for 12 months or more. There is just too much vulgarity and cussing on TV and our sense of morality is going down the sewers. I am no saint by any means but obscenity does not sit right with me. I think it is in very poor taste and it demonstrates a critical lack of class, decency, and intellect.

well it was just to much, the wrong place at the wrong time..if all athletes swore like a trucker on tv and interviews..well sports in general would suffer agreat loss of many viewers and respect by younger viewers in general..

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Amigo!

And although I have great respect for our friend, jlgr34, for a lot of his great posts and replies, I have to strongly disagree about his statement that "these are common words, common, almost every father in the world swears in front of their kids".

That is a distorted perspective because while I agree that there is a lot of obscenity in Hollywood and else where in the entertainment world, there are millions of fathers around the world who do not expose their children to profanity and who raise their children to acquire good values and good education. Depravity and immorality may be evident in our society but so are good values and honorable beliefs and practices by those who are faithful to their cultural and religious traditions. If there is one thing I admire about the Muslims, it is their highly conservative values, which includes sheilding their children and families to unholy behavior. (Now let us not get into a discussion of radical extremism and their wrong perception of what constitutes entrance into heaven).

Simply put, good behavior is expected of those exposed to millions of viewers around the world because theirs is the likelihood of being held as "role models" - whether they care to accept it or not.

i did see the fight and the emotional display afterwards. i guess i saw a man who lost more than just the fight but his entire dream. was it too much, absolutely. did i want to see or hear that, no way. should he have done a better job controlling his words and emotions, no doubt.

imo, he's a fighter, not a politician, not a polished public speaker, but an athlete who just lost everything. he couldn't control his emotions and it all just came out in the interview. i guess when you're in that sort of a place, the last thing you think about is what are the right words.

i'm not sure a ban was the right thing to do, it won't solve the problem. maybe hbo could have done a better job of filtering the interview and ending it quicker.

just my opinion.

Unfortunately, you are absolutely right. He lost it. In radio, they have that 7-second delay of broadcast to be absolutely sure that what is unacceptable is "bleeped out".

Unfortunately, too, that was a live broadcast. There was no such device. Unfortunately, he is a crude man whose true character succumbed to a moment of weakness - when what is demanded is "when the going gets tough, the tough gets going". We all have our soft compassionate nature and perhaps need to give some to him. But I was there. I watched it. I heard it. And whatever respect I held for him as a boxer disappeared very quickly with that outburst.

well, i respect your opinions as well, its just my opinion, i think it was to hasrh the ban, remember he was frustated at the moment, and i dont think he meant to insult anybody or even vladimir at the time he just used the words hes always use, maybe it was a little out of proportion for him to swear that much but like i said more and more this times people curse at everything, maybe not everyone curses but almost everyone, children often hear this words at school, in the TV, in the shopping mall everywhere, they are even being use in a different manner now as not to insult just like any other word, still is their choice but like i said there are worst things to worry about that arreola swearing in front of a camera i dont find it offesive at all since its done all around us all the time by different people, it doesnt matter if it is a celebrity, a doctor or lawyer, a construction worker or a politician they all curse maybe not in public but i bet you at their homes they do
