Now over 3 million cable phone subscribers in Canada
Digital Home
November 6, 2009

It has now been over four years since cable telephony first launched in this country and the number of Canadians receiving cable telephone service from Canada’s big four cable companies – Rogers, Shaw, Vidéotron and Cogeco – is quickly closing in on three million subscribers.

Using numbers published in the respective company’s most recent financial results, Digital Home has calculated that the big four cable providers now have 2,999,425 cable telephone customers up 23.5% from the same time in 2008.

Although not publicly reported, if cable phone numbers from privately held Eastlink Cable, Canada’s fifth largest cable operator, were available then the total number of Canadian cable telephone subscribers would be well over three million.

Since Videotron and Rogers recent fiscal quarters ended September 30th and the Cogeco and Shaw fiscal quarters ended August 31st, the numbers are not specific to one date but they still manage to convey the strong demand for cable telephone service.

By comparing the same fiscal quarters, Digital Home calculates the big four cable companies have added 569,993 digital telephone subscribers in the last 12 months. That works out to more than 47,500 new subscribers a month.

Since Cable telephony began rolling out in Canada in early 2005, Rogers and Videotron have been neck and neck jostling for the lead in terms of number of subscribers. The latest financial results find that Videotron is now the current cable telephone leader in Canada.

As of September 30th, Quebec based Videotron had 979,100 cable telephone subscribers while Ontario based Rogers had 909,000 cable telephone subscribers. A year ago Rogers held the edge with 800,000 subscribers compared to Videotron’s 797,900.

The following are the most recent cable telephone subscriber counts for the big four cable companies (All subscriber counts have been sourced from the respective company’s most recent financial statements):

* Videotron – 979,100 (9/30/08)
* Rogers- 909,000 (9/30/09)
* Shaw – 829,717 (8/31/09)
* Cogeco – 281,606 (8/31/09)
