I am curious to hear from the testers their assessments of the SD picture quality from the various manufacturers? I find the video (baseband or s-video) quality on my current box (DN) to be very 'washed out' and am considering getting another box.
Who is doing the best job on picture quality?

The best picture i have seen with the stb's that I have worked with was the neusat sp6000 and digiwave 7000. I consider them both better than original dn boxes.

The quality is a bit better on my CoolSat 5000 (compared to SonicView SV-1000).
Both connected to a panasonic 16:9 DLP HD projector using Component.
The difference is very subtle. I didn't compare the S-Video quality of oth units.

I have a coolsat 500 hooked up to a mitsubishi 57 inch with component cables. It has a very good picture on most channels. I also work with alot of buzz s2010f plus boxes and they have better picture quality using component cables.

out of the 3 over here, 3100 IRD, VS ultra,Pansat 3500.
3100 is worst for pic quality
pansat has better pic on component(ypbpr) than ultra.
Ultra has better pic on s-vhs than pansat.
All viewed on Samsung 42" HD plasma.

This question really is not as easy to get an answer to as you might think as to get the best quality of picture really comes down to How good a picture does your monitor / tv give and how well does all the hardware, transmission lines and or provider able supply the signal. If this seems like a loaded question or answer, just take a walk into Best Buy, Future Shop or any place selling a lot of televisions and you will begin to lean towards some more than others. This may be a result of others being set up with different brightness, contrast, color, tint, adjustments that aren't to your liking. I tend to read a lot of reviews, listen to unbiased opinions as well as happy owners saying how great it is.
With all due respect, it may not be your reciever that is in question here as it could be your television is getting older and color tends to look as though they are bleached or washed out due to the red, blue and green screen guns and everything else has seen better days. You might want to hook up another tv/ monitor and make sure it's your box rather than something else giving you the washed out pictures.

I have the Coolsat 6000 and Pansat 2700a
The Coolsat 6000 has the best picture quality by far and much faster channel loading.
The Pansat 2700a is money wasted and at the time I didn't compare it to other receivers before I bought it. The picture quality on the Pansat is ok for smaller screen televisions but would not recommend it on a 32" television or higher. It has a washed-out look to the picture. Alot of the time I have to reset or reboot the Pansat because certain channels would not load. The channels load slowly. It does not have the memory that the Coolsat 6000 does.
